But how British society was in the 1950s also made life miserable for one of the greatest intellects in all recorded history, and hastened his death at age 41. Alan Turing cracked Nazi battle codes in World War Two, saving millions of lives; invented AI and the modern general-purpose computer; and developed mathematics that continue to be explored today, helping us understand clusters in cities, genetic evolution, and biological development.

What might he have achieved had he lived longer? Thanks to Turing, humanity has received gifts that have enriched our lives and made everything that little bit more extraordinary.
